Description

In recent years, the changes in prices, demand and supply of services accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's subsequent war of aggression in Ukraine along with earlier deregulation of opening hours, have changed work and working conditions in the service sectors. These pose challenges to well-being at work, competence and productivity in the service sector as well as their promotion through the means of work ability management. The “Well-being at work and competence in the service sector” data provides an updated overview of work in the service sectors and the related well-being at work, competence and professionalism in the 2020s.

The data provides an overview of the work in private service sectors. Private services include commerce, tourism and catering, real estate services, security and a collection of other smaller sectors.

The study was carried out by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health with funding from the Finnish Work Environment Fund, the Finnish Service Union PAM, the Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa, the Real Estate Employers and the four companies involved in the study.

What the indicators describe

The survey data was collected in May 2022. A total of 3,662 members of the Finnish Service Union PAM who work in commerce, tourism and catering, real estate services, security or other private service sectors responded to the survey. The examined data is a random sample of 80 per cent of the total data. A random sample of the total dataset ensures the anonymity of individual respondents.

In the survey, the respondents were asked for their views on their work, employment relationship, time, community, well-being, professionalism, competence, threatening and violent confrontations, and changes in work. The answer options varied by question. The answer options for each question are shown for each answer distribution. The questionnaire replies are shown as percentages of each option.

The data can be viewed according to gender, age, sector, level of education, type of employment, location of the workplace, number of employees at the location, and supervisory position.
